q: Why does a fire truck come when i called for an ambulance? A: there are several reasons why a fire truck shows up when an ambulance has been called. the fire truck may have been returning from another run or is closer than the medic. another reason is more personnel are needed than the 2 staffed on the medic. (i.e. cardiac arrest) our first out fire trucks are stocked with the many of the same life saving drugs as on the medics and an aed, allowing us to start potential life saving measures quicker.
q: do firefighters live at the fire house? a: yes, the firefighters at heath work 24 hours on duty and 48 off. they do everything from cooking meals and working out to yard work and training. all while being prepared to take runs. Firefighters work 24-hour shifts, because unlike police, firefighters cannot go out and perform training, inspections etc. during the nighttime. It would take more firefighters to cover 8 hour shifts. Firefighters at heath work a 56 hour work week and the 24 hour shift allows this. This type of schedule is the most cost-effective work schedule to provide fire protection and is the most common.
q: why do i see the firetruck/medic at the store ? a: firefighters spend 24 hours at work, this includes fixing meals. firefighters pay money out of their own pockets in the mornings and make a quick trip to the store in order to get groceries for the days meals.
q: why did i see a newark/granville/hebron etc. fire truck/medic in heath? A: the heath fire department has what we call mutual aid agreements across licking county. this allows us to call our surrounding fire departments for help or visa-versa.
Q: what should i do if my i think i smell natural gas? A: evacuate your home call 9-1-1 from a neighbors house. the pilot light from your stove alone has the potential to ignite a gas leak.
Q: what should i do if my carbon monoxide detector is going off? A: evacuate your home and call 9-1-1. we also ask that you do not try to ventilate your home before the fire department arrives. if all the co has been ventilated it could make it hard for the fire department to find where it is coming from and fix the problem.
